Country superstar Reba McEntire made her first foray into series
television in this edgy comedy that takes aim at the all-American
family with a spirited Southern look at suburban dysfunction.
Now beginning its third season, the series began with the Hart family
in the midst of a divorce as Texas soccer mom Reba (McEntire) watched
her white-picket-fenced world collapse before her very eyes. Her dentist
husband, Brock (Christopher Rich, Murphy Brown), left her after what
she thought was 20 happy years of marriage for his impossibly perky
and unfortunately pregnant dental hygienist, Barbra Jean (Melissa
Peterman, Fargo).
Reba's strength was tested yet again with the pregnancy of her
then-17-year-old daughter Cheyenne (JoAnna Garcia, Freaks and Geeks,
Party of Five, American Pie 2) and her decision to marry her boyfriend,
high school football star Van (Steve Howey). All this upheaval made
a rocky transition period for second daughter Kyra (Scarlett Pomers,
Star Trek: Voyager), who is now 14 years old and greeting puberty
with venom. The calmest member of the family is 9-year-old Jake
(Mitch Holleman, Daddio), who takes everything in stride, including
the arrival of two new babies when Barbra Jean and Cheyenne both
gave birth at the end of the first season.
This season, Reba will face more changes when the rebellious Kyra
moves out of Reba's house and in with Brock and Barbra Jean. Devastated
by Kyra's decision, Reba will learn that distance isn't always a
bad thing for a mother and daughter and that parenting is often
about letting go. Every member of the family is affected by Kyra's
new living arrangement. Brock and Barbra Jean find that life with
a disruptive teenager means their honeymoon is definitely over.
For the young parents, Cheyenne and Van, Kyra's absence gives them
a new understanding of Reba's feelings. Cheyenne also realizes it's
time to think about a real career, and pleases Brock by announcing
that she wants to follow in his footsteps and become a dentist -
a decision that Reba is none too happy about. In the most surprising
twist, Reba and Brock find that they have more understanding and
empathy for one another now that Kyra has moved her teenage angst
out of Reba's house and into Brock's.
Kyra's decision causes a series of ripples that change the lives
of everyone in the family, but both households will continue to
muddle through with love and optimism as they have always done.
Reba was created by Allison M. Gibson (Home Improvement, Boy Meets
World). Kevin Abbott (Roseanne) serves as executive producer with
Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel (Titus) and Matthew Berry for
Twentieth Century Fox Television.
