Season: 10
Episode: 1
Title: Now What?
Detailed Summary (Review-->)
Carter is back from Africa, and goes straight to Abby’s apartment
from the airport. He walks in hoping to be welcomed with opened
arms by Abby after leaving abruptly last season during the finale
without talking it over with her nor listening to her request for
him to stay. He stands over her while she is sleeping, caressing
her face and kissing her on the cheek. She wakes up, surprised to
see Carter there. He tells her he missed her, but she does not care,
she asks if he just let himself in. He then apologizes, saying he’s
sorry for the way he left, but again, she ignores him and asks for
her key to her apartment back while smoking a cigarette. Carter
gets up to leave and drops the keys on her dresser without saying
a word.
Cut to a Mother driving her kids and her friend’s kids to
what seems to be a field trip. On the way there, she is on the cell
phone, cursing the fact that she is stuck in traffic. Now the Mother
looks weak and breathless on the phone and then passes out while
the car is still moving. It runs into another car and flips over,
the Mother is able to open her eyes in time to see an oncoming car
slam into her car while everyone is still inside.
Meanwhile Pratt is late for work, rushing to catch the L train.
He sits down next to an attractive female, exclaiming to himself
that if he is late, his boss will be upset. The female asks him
if he is a doctor, and Pratt, now noticing her, transforms into
his flirtatious self and proudly answers yes he is a doctor. Opening
credits.
After a lame ass campaign ad from Ah-nold (for us Californians),
we’re back to Pratt in the L train explaining his job to the
attractive female. There is a delay, and he gives a look disbelief.
The accident that happened earlier is right in front of County
General, you can see the firefighters trying to pry the victims
out, as Chen, Gallant, Abby, Haleh, Jerry, Malik, and Chuny walk
by. Here we find out that Gallant has graduated, fourth in his class,
and he is now officially a doctor. Inside the ER, we see that they
are making some renovations, and its causing havoc. The computers
go dead. Weaver is screaming at the top of her lungs, its noisy,
and a new med student is trying to check in with angry Frank, who
exclaims “Don’t we hire Americans anymore”. See,
the med student, Neela, is of Indian descent from England, and I
guess angry Frank doesn’t approve. Abby is looking for Dr.
Lewis, and finds her in a room with her ex-husband who were probably
doing you know what in there. When Lewis comes to the front desk,
Frank announces that she has another TWA, referring to Neela. Weaver
is now looking for Pratt and tells Jerry to page Pratt until he
answers.
Carter and Pratt walk in together, and immediately Weaver is on
Pratt for being late, admonishing him as he says he was helping
the paramedics outside and assisting on an incoming trauma. As Carter
walks in, he is surprised to see the ER under such renovation, asking
Frank where the lounge is, which has been moved. Weaver sees Carter
and asks whether he brought Kovac (who was in Africa with him) back
with him. He says no and just walks off. In the lounge, he finds
a plastic bag full of his stuff, courtesy of Abby, who left a note
that said “You forgot your stuff”. He scoffs and we
head to commercial break.
One of the kids from the accident is grimacing in pain, asking
for his Mom. Gallant comforts him, saying don’t worry, I’m
doctor Gallant, and a surprised Pratt asks “Doctor? When did
this happen”. Pratt then notices the new med student through
the window helping Dr. Lewis with the Mother, who was driving the
car. He walks in offering to help, and is shamelessly flirting with
Neela. Carter walks in, seeing if they need help, but isn’t
needed, so he walks into the next room where Chen and Abby are attending
to the daughter of the driver. You can sense the tension between
Abby and Carter as Chen leaves to attend to another kid that was
removed from the accident. Chen walks into the room where Pratt
is and sees him flirting with Neela. Noticeably bothered by this,
she calls upon Malik for assistance.
Outside where Chen is taking care of her patient, Pratt is told
to assist her by Lewis. As soon as Pratt helps out, she coldly asks
how he was able to pry himself away from the new med student. In
his defense, he explains that he was just helping her out. Through
the window, Neela can see the two and asks Chuny if those two are
together. Chuny replies with an “Oh yeah.”
For some reason, Neela is left alone in the trauma room with the
Mother as she begins to crash. She calls out for help and Corday
walks in. Now Chen, Pratt, and Chuny come in to help, and they need
her labs. Chen orders Neela to retrieve the labs and isn’t
very nice about it. Upstairs now, Neela is looking for the labs,
and they are still pending. She walks in to find the doctor completing
the labs even though she is told she is not allowed to, and is able
to get the results. Because of this, she is able to come up with
a diagnosis and save this woman’s life.
Now the phone lines are messed up, and Frank is going nuts. Pratt
brings Neela over to the charts and tell her to choose one to assess.
She looks at the charts a little overwhelmed when Gallant notices
that she is having some trouble. Gallant is making small talk with
Neela, and finds out she’s Indian, moved to England when she
was eleven, and went to Yale. He helps her choose a chart while
Frank makes more racist comments and Romano is back with a beard.
Pratt asks to speak to Carter, so Carter tells Abby if she needs
anything to call him. She dryly answers with “I won’t”.
Outside, Pratt asks what that was all about, and Carter says its
probably because he left. Pratt says there might be something out
there because Chen is pissed at him too, his explanation is simply
just a misunderstanding, without elaborating. The reason Pratt needed
to speak to Carter is because a patient with HIV needs medication
but cannot afford it, his insurance won’t cover it unless
he has AIDS. Carter checks on the patient and confirms that he now
has AIDS and can get his medication.
Abby and Susan are discussing Carter and whether he should be forgiven.
The women’s restroom is not available so Susan uses the men’s
restroom. Susan tells Abby that she should just give Carter a chance
to make it up.
Since the ER seems to be so busy, no one is around to answer the
phones. Neela takes it upon herself to answer it, and the call is
long distance for Carter. Frank tells her to take a message, but
its important, someone has died. Jerry asks who, and Neela replies
“A doctor Kovac, Luka Kovac”. Chen, Chuny, Jerry, and
Frank are around to hear and they are stunned.
Outside, Carter and Abby are finally talking. They are walking,
drinking coffee, and Carter is talking about his experience in Africa,
stating it’s a life changing experience. Abby asks where Luka
is, and Carter just answers that he is fine. Abby is upset because
they don’t really talk, even though his mouth is moving, she
walks away not knowing what he is really feeling. She asks if he
wanted to hurt her when he decided to go to Africa, since he wasn’t
even going to tell her about it. She is upset and walks away, and
Chuny is there to tell her the news about Luka. Inside, Abby is
being consoled by Susan and Carter is on the phone trying to find
out more information.
Gallant and Neela are checking on an older female patient where
Neela has to check on her vitals every fifteen minutes. She comes
back to check on her but cannot find the patient, someone must have
moved her to another room. Neela then helps Pratt with another patient
with Chen there to give her a hard time. Neela gave the wrong diagnosis,
and Chen let her know it. Pratt confronts Chen, telling her that
she was too harsh on the med student, telling her that he was just
trying to help her, but Chen says that he is humiliating her. During
their argument, Malik comes out telling them that there is an old
lady bleeding out. Gallant is in there giving CPR, and Chen comes
in to admonish him. Neela comes in saying its her fault, but Gallant
takes the blame. Chen still gives Neela a hard time, telling her
she should have checked the board to see if her patient had been
moved. The patient dies, and Neela takes it hard. She stays next
to the patient’s body, and Pratt walks in to comfort her.
She asks him what a TWA is because that’s what Frank called
her earlier but she doesn’t know what it means. Pratt explains
it means Third World Assassin, and seems disgusted that Frank said
that. To make her feel better, Pratt asks her to follow him to check
on the Mother that was involved in the accident earlier. She is
still alive because of Neela’s diagnosis and persistence on
retrieveing the lab results.
Carter decided abruptly that he needs to go back to Africa to retrieve
Luka’s body and find out what really happened. Abby can’t
believe that he is just going to leave like this again, begging
him to stay, but Carter is adamant about going back, and does, leaving
Abby standing there alone.
