Fake Tears

March 12th, 2007 by adlee10

Simon has been stating every season that the contestants are really playing to the cameras when they appear to be teary eyed or even crying when another contestant has been voted off the show. Could these contestants really be that good of actors? Is it not possible to become friends and care about someone that your competing against, especially for something you’ve always dreamt about?

In my opinion, I think some of the tears are real. I think it is possible that the contestants become friends. The media and viewers can be incredibly harsh, finding ways to say something mean about their voice, appearance, looks, style, even the way they breath during a performance. Their schedules are insanely busy, and I believe it is a lot of work. They have to film those cheezy commericals, memorize their songs, including group performances, do interviews, photoshoots. Only a handful of people in the world know what it is like to go through what they go through, and they spend pretty much all day everyday together. If they don’t drive each other crazy, then they somehow bond. Of course, on those elimination days, emotions are running high. Nerves, stress, fear, excitement. Those tears could be for sadness a friend won’t be there the next day going through the daily routine, and perhaps also relief that it wasn’t them.

I went to a results show taping during the second season, the one where Julia DeMato was voted off. It definitely was emotional and tense in the studio. After it was announced that Julia was the one being eliminated, the cameras of course pan to her supposed arch-nemesis Kimberly Caldwell, who was pretty much bawling, complete with eye makeup streaming down her face. For most of us, we probably would have assumed she was just pretending, since she was marked as being a b*tch in the Hollywood rounds. But after the cameras turned off, and the audience was leaving, she was still crying, and she and Julia walked off stage with their arms around one another.

In the end, I really do believe, that even though you may feel relieved that you weren’t the one voted off, you can still feel bad that someone else was. It could be an accumulation of diferent emotions, but the tears can be real. That doesn’t mean some of the sad, shocked, and crying faces aren’t fake, because sometimes it does look fake to me.

American Idol - Season 6

March 12th, 2007 by adlee10

The twelve luckiest wannabe pop stars in America have been announced, and the television juggernaut known as American Idol continues its ratings dominance for its 6th season in a row. I refrained from watching the auditions and Hollywood rounds because it is exactly the same every year. Some laughable auditions, some standouts…except as the years go by, the number of standouts seem to diminish. Then the Hollywood rounds produce the same drama…lack of sleep, forgetting lyrics, uncooperative group members. Of course, the semi-finals and finals also produce the same drama (how did THAT person make it through? why did America vote for this person instead of that person?, etc. etc.). But the potential of one of those amazing, memorable performances is what keeps me coming back.

As it has been said by the media, this season does lack something, the “x” factor maybe, or as Randy annoyingly put it, the “yo” factor. There really isn’t a Clay or Reuben, Fantasia, Carrie or Bo and so forth. They do have the usual, let’s just say, the ones America loves to hate in Sanjaya Malakar and Haley “what’s her name”, and the usual group of divas (LaKisha, Melinda, Stephanie). Then they have a rocker chick in Gina, which I don’t believe they have had before, unless you count Kimberley Caldwell, which I wouldn’t. There are two teeny bopper hearthrobs this year, one being the unconventional beat-boxing Blake Lewis, and Justin Timberlake Jr. Chris Richardson.

But I want to give credit to this year’s group. Sure, no one has really blown us away yet, but I definitely see the potential. Melinda Doolittle has to be my favorite. Personality wise, she is humble and funny, and vocally she is amazing. A lot of buzz has been going around about LaKisha, and I do like her, but I don’t really think she has been THAT good, but I know she has it ini her. I also like Jordin Sparks, she seems like a sweet kid and has a really big voice. As for the guys, they really have been overshadowed by the girls, but I like the two hearthrobs. Blake Lewis is different, he can beatbox and carry a tune, which makes the live performance fun, then again, the beatboxing can get old if he does it every week. Chris Richardson also has good stage presence, one of my favorite performances was his “Geek In Pink” one.

Ripa vs. Aiken with a Side of O’Donnell

November 22nd, 2006 by adlee10

I am torn between choosing whose side to be on in the latest celebrity feud.  I wouldn’t want someone’s hand, especially someone I do not know very well, coming anywhere near my face, especially covering my mouth. But, I can see how Clay Aiken would think it would be funny since he felt he could not get a word in during the interview with Dancing with the Stars winners Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke. He isn’t an exprienced interviewer, and well, Kelly Ripa was doing all the talking. Then again, it is Kelly’s show, she knows what she is doing, and she is just naturally chatty. I’m not sure it should have been made into such a big deal, she says he wasn’t respectful, so maybe there is something that I did not see. It is hard for me to imagine Clay Aiken as disrespectful and rude, but fame and fortune does change people.

What makes this into an issue with me is Rosie O’Donnell’s comments on her show, The View, about this incident. When Kelly remarked “I don’t know where that hand has been” after Clay covers her moth, Rosie announced to the “viewing” audience that she felt it was a homophobic remark. Rosie said something to the effect of “Had he been a straight man, or a cute guy, she would not have said that”. First of all, Clay has never come out of the closet, in fact, he denies the constant gay rumors that surround him. Secondly, there are plenty of people out there who think he is cute. Check his message boards. Third….homophobic?? How about just germaphobic?? Like Kelly said when she called into The View, he was shaking everyone’s hands, the audience members, the interviewees, who knows what else he touched. People sneeze into their hands and touch the railings and door knobs. It is flu season. But, that is Rosie’s “view”, and she has the right to say what she wants, even though I think it is absolutely ridiculous, and, since she is a celebrity speaking on a nationally televised show, it could be a start of many rumors about Kelly Ripa actually being homophobic.

Has Lost lost it - By: Mike

November 19th, 2006 by adlee10

So finally Lost as come to it’s end.  We see that mating has returned
to the cages.  Thanks to Kate and Sawyer.  Eko dies.  Jack now takes
control of the situtation that the other’s present.  However it feels
incomplete.  How did the polar bears get onto that island if they came
from Othersville?  Who are the others?  Where is Miss Kluge?  Why are
the others so picky about bringing people off the island.  Where did
that damn cow come from for Juliett to make her hamburger?  Where are
the tallies and how come they didn’t do any prison work?  Many
questions left unanswered, and questions that were answered, were in
season 2.

In the four episodes focuses mainly on the Others, Jack, Sawyer, and
Kate.  Jin and Suns, Mr. Eko’s and Locke’s episdoes really didn’t have
that much of an impact so far.  From those centric episodes we see
that Sun cheats, Locke gets high, and Mr. Eko still thinks his sins
are rightous.  Oh yeah don’t forget the Dharma Pirate.
Basically season 3 isn’t what seasons one and two were
Season One had a great story which were broken down into three
different parts; Life on the island, Flashback, and getting off the
island.

Season Two’s story wasn’t as good due to the fact that they simply
gave up since they found a new home.  However it did present
questions.  The hatch, what was it used for, what happens when you
don’t push the button, Who are the others, Who are the tallies, and
what kind of story did they have to tell?

What was different in season two, it answered questions from season
one, with the exception of what the black smoke is, and it answered
questions within its own season, like the button pushing, the others,
what happened to Clarie, and Henry Gale .

The problem with season three is that, in these first six episodes the
story is about the others and their island but we really didn’t get a
story about them because there really is no story to tell, beside the
fact that they have tvs, cable, running water, and a book club.
That’s it!  We do not get the story of how they got there, no flash
back for Tom aka Mr. Friendly or Zeke, Ben aka Henry Gale, or Julliet.
Who are these people, we already know that Locke does werid things in
order to speak to the island.  We already know that Jin and Sun have
had a failing marriage.  We already know that Kate was running from
the FBI and that Sawyer is a con man, and that Jack has marriage
problems of his own.  We weren’t even formally introduced to the new
characters Nikki and Paulo.  Who are the others? Couldn’t you of at
least one tell us what the others are like, and not give us these
completely from left field kind of questions.

I would like to say that these last 6 are just as good as one WNBA
game.  It was truly difficult to watch, hard to understand, and it
really has no point.

My Fanage hasn’t died however, i know i will committ myself to see
what Lost has in store for us in Feburary.  Alcatraz (or the island of
the Others) is suppose to be over and done with, we are suppose to see
the tallies.

J.J please come back and forget your Star Trek Movie.

Racketballing, Arm Wrestling and The Most Annoying Character On TV

October 12th, 2006 by adlee10

The Gilmore Girls are back and still hilarious. They are now in season 7 and the show hasn’t lost its charm. The season premiere follows their relationship problems. To avoid discussing it any further, they decided to pick up a sport and they came to the conclusion that racketball would suit them the best. Lorelai’s smack talking was funny, as was her racketball outfit and their short-lived game.

Sookie beat Michele in arm wrestling. This is because of all the whisking she did by hand over the years. Her celebration song and dance was really entertaining, Michele’s whining was not.

Oh but Taylor is still there, being as annoying as ever. His sidekick Kirk of course is by his side, taking out a wall of Luke’s diner.

Overall, good episode. Here are screencaps:

McDreamy vs. McVet

October 11th, 2006 by adlee10

Meredith Grey is one lucky girl. She has a handsome neurosurgeon and a handsome veternarian fighting for her affection, and boy is she taking advantage. Season 3 starts with her trying to make a decision between the two, flip-flopping back and forth before finally coming to the brilliant decision of wanting to date both of them. At the same time. With both of them aware of the situation and obliging. How does one choose?

Is it me, or does McDreamy seem a little more pompous and maybe even a little bit of a jerk this season? I think back to the locker room scene he had with George, and he just acted like a know-it-all jerk. At least that was how I felt. But, in his flashback where he meets Meredith for the first time in the bar, he came off charming.

McVet on the other hand, has always been sweet and understanding. It was McDreamy who started the dating war in episode 3. I think McVet nailed it when he said McDreamy is bad for Meredith. I think you know who I want Meredith to choose, but, I am pretty sure McDreamy would win. But did you notice in the opening dream sequence where Meredith is lying in bed with both men, McDreamy had a bit of a pot belly. I’m just saying. He is not TOTALLY perfect.
